Motor Legend Festival 2018 opening
MOTOR LEGEND FESTIVAL STARTS WITH PATRESE, FERRARI AND THE TESTS OF THE F1 GRAND PRIX SAN MARINO
ALSO ERIK COMAS AT THE TRIBUTE TO AYRTON SENNA
Motor Legend Festival 2018 opens its doors: from 8.30 this morning and until 20 the Imola racetrack will host the first events of this unique international event.
From the early hours of the morning in this authentic motorsport festival you will see many of the protagonists of the weekend darting along the Emilian track.
We will start with Riccardo Patrese and many champions driving Martini Racing cars in the parade dedicated to the 50th anniversary of this brand; following there will be the shows of the very rare racing Alfa Romeo exits from the racing department of the Casa del Biscione, the Autodelta. These include a unique example: the Alfa Romeo 33/2 Daytona which is part of the FCA Heritage collection.
Both in the morning and in the afternoon, the Ferrari Corse Clienti will hold the bench, which has arrived in Imola with its own F1 customers and the XX Programs. The pilots of the Maranello cars will spin giving a show under the watchful eye of the official drivers Marc Gené and Olivier Beretta.
During the day, Motor Legend Festival will be enlivened also by the first free practice and qualifications of the prestigious FIA Master Historic F.1 San Marino Grand Prix, the first round of the world championship reserved for F1 cars built from 1966 to 1985. Twenty-nine single-seater registered at the event. On the track also all the other categories of FIA Masters, from Sport Prototype to tourism and Gran Turismo made from the 60s to the present day.
French rider Erik Comas will not miss the Ayrton Senna Tribute, which will be organized as part of the Motor Legend Festival at 15pm on Saturday 21st April. Along with him there will be Riccardo Patrese and many other protagonists of the Formula 1 of that era.
The presence of the French rider is important because it is a tribute to the Brazilian ace who was the first to come to his aid when the Ligier of Comas crashed violently against the barriers at Blanchimont during the free practice of the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix. From then on a strong friendship was cemented between the two.
For a tragic irony of fate at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, Comas was the only pilot to arrive at the site of the Senna accident, when without being warned, he left the box with his Larrousse finding himself in front of the rescue scene to the Paulista champion.
Erik Comas was one of the best pilots of his generation. French Formula 3 champion in 1988 with the Dallara of the Oreca team, in 1990 he won the Formula 3000 intercontinental championship at the wheel of a Lola-Mugen. Passed in Formula 1 he played 59 Grand Prix with Ligier and Larrousse before retiring in the 1994 season.
Comas has continued his career in Japan, becoming official driver of Nissan, with which he triumphed in two championships in a row in the prestigious GT series in 1998 and 1999.
Married with an Italian, Comas has returned to an ancient passion in recent years: the rallies. He exalted the myth of the Lancia Stratos winning the Italian rally championships in 2015 and the RallyLegend in the same year and triumphing at the 100th edition of the Targa Florio in 2016. In 2017 he graduated European champion historical rallies.
